Ambassador Xiao Jianguo Met with New Minister of Health Belo

On June 19, Ambassador Dr. Xiao Jianguo called on the newly-appointed Minister of Health, H.E. Ms. Odete Maria Belo. The two sides exchanged views on jointly fighting against COVID-19 and deepening exchanges and cooperation in public health between two countries.

Ambassador Xiao briefed Minister Belo on President Xi Jinping's speeches at the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA) and the online China-Africa Summit on Solidarity against COVID-19 and China's major steps to enhance global cooperation and China's aid to Timor-Leste in fighting against COVID-19.Ambassador Xiao appreciated positive achievements of the Timorese Government and people in fighting the epidemic and emphasized that China was ready to maintain close communication with the Ministry of Health to deepen medical cooperation and provide assistance within its capacity to Timor-Leste in fighting against COVID-19 and socio-economic recovery and development of Timor-Leste. Ambassador Xiao hoped that the Timorese Government could provide necessary health care services for Chinese citizens in Timor-Leste if they were in need.

Minister Belo highly appreciated important leadership of the Chinese Government in the global fighting against COVID-19, sincerely thanked China for its assistance and support for Timor-Leste and fully recognized the efforts of the local Chinese citizens and enterprises. Minister Belo noted that Timor-Leste would continuously devote all resources to fighting the epidemic and avoid the rebound. Timor-Leste was willing to further strengthen medical and health cooperation with China, and expected that China could share more valuable experiences and show stronger support to Timor-Leste. The Ministry of Health stood ready to provide health care services for Chinese citizens and facilitate Chinese enterprises in Timor-Leste to resume production.
